Rank of Poker Hands
Rank of poker hands
The winning hand is determined by seeing which hand has the strongest combination of cards, using any 5 card combination of “pocket” and “community” cards in Hold’em, and a combination of 2 “pocket” cards and 3 “community” cards in Omaha and in Omaha Hi/Lo. The combinations are listed here from strongest to weakest hand.

Three-of-a-kind (trips, set) Three cards of the same rank.

Two pair Two cards of the same rank and another two cards of the same rank. The example below would be called “jacks and twos” or “jacks and deuces”.
![]() |
One pair Two cards of the same rank.

High card When you don’t have any of the above, your highest card determines your hand. The example below would be “king high” or “high card king”.

Kicker If two players have the same combination of cards to make the strongest hand where not all cards are counted in the combination, such as four of a kind, three of a kind, two pair and one pair, the highest side card(s) will determine the winner (called the kicker). In the example below, player B will win the hand with his higher kicker.

Please note that in a game where two (or more) players have the exact same strength of hand. For example the same two pairs and the same value of kicker. In this case the pot would be split evenly among all competing players at showdown.
